The Attack of the Victoria Crew!
w/ Thom Banks and Mike Gano
+ resident Ollie Ple
Come check out two of Victoria's top house/techno DJs rock it at SiGNAL. Thom Banks is no stranger at The Lotus/SiGNAL, and he has rocked the dancefloor in the basement many a times; Mike Gano will be making his debut appearance, bringing along that Victoria flavour.
Both of these guys rocked the Meadow stage at Soundwave this year, which is why we think you have to come and catch their set, specially if you missed out on Soundwave (how could you?).
Thom Banks has been a staple in the Garden City house/techno scene since 1998, DJing and promoting club nights, afterhours, and benefit events. Currently, Thom has a bi-monthly residency, Tech Support, at the Jungle Room in Victoria, BC. This tech-flavoured house night also features support from DJ's Kenzie Clarke, Hrdvsion, and J-Feud. Tech Support has hosted the likes of Saucey from Taiwan and Kevin Shiu, after his Asian tour with Sasha - this club night sets the tone for house and techno music on Vancouver Island. Thom is also resident DJ on the Renegade Sound System beach stage at Soundwave, West Coast Canada's fabled 3 day outdoor electronic music festival that happens every summer in Ucluelet, BC. His music has allowed him to travel to the beaches of Mexico, the full moon parties in Thailand, the all-night clubs and afterhour parties of Taiwan and Hong Kong, and the lounges and clubs in Toronto. He has consistently been selected to play alongside talents such as Mark Farina, Lawnchair Generals, Dirt Crew, Chopstick, John Howard, Miss Honey Dijon, Gene Farris, David Alvarrado, Kid Loco, Jason Hodges, Ali, Sean Dimitrie w/ Timmy Fuller, Halo, Donald Glaude and Saucey, to name a few.
Freshly imported from San Francisco, Gano is now one of the fastest growing names in the B.C. dance music scene. It’s true: this man’s been busy. In the last year alone, his name has appeared alongside some major talent: Deep Dish, Junkie XL, Gaudi, Terry Francis, and Kenny Glasgow. Also, Gano’s joined forces with Kevin Legere (of Death to Sexy fame) to form a new DJ/Live-remixing duo called Double Dog Dare. Add to that Gano’s recent induction into Sunset Collaborations (a crew of passionate, dedicated Victoria, B.C. DJs and producers), and you begin to wonder how he finds time for his day job as a professional poker player.
It’s the music that drives him. It’s his religion. Ask any of his loyal disciples. Gano lives and breathes to the beats. For instance: he’s known to play epic 5, 6, 7 hour sets. He can’t get enough. He surrounds himself with the music, the culture, and the people that love it, and he thoroughly engages with this rapidly growing community: performing, producing, learning, teaching, dancing and partying his ass off. Gano is always searching: listening for that future sound, something innovative and fresh, from others or from within. He refuses to comprimise his artistic integrity. Of course he’s always happy to drop a fan favorite, though it’ll likely be his own funked up remix.
It’s all about the funk afterall. Drawing on decades spent absorbing major scenes across North America, Gano offers a more eclectic sound than most, ranging from groovy tech-house to melodic techno to massive electro. That “fun sound” his fans describe often features a playful organic vibe, a bouncing bass line, and a whole lotta funk.
