Born in Abadan, Iran in 1973, Farshad Abasi (aka DJ Abasi) has traveled and lived all over the world, but came to call Vancouver his home in 1988. He was surrounded by music and dancing since birth, with his father a being music teacher who can play almost any instrument and an avid fan of all flavours of music from Western Pop, Disco, and Country to Persian Folk and World music. Upon the discovery of the “.mod” music scene of the early 90s, he became seriously interested in dance and electronica in 1991 and started creating sampling and remixing tracks and building a CD collection, used to make mix tapes for friends. Inspired by such local DJs such as David Hawkes and Czech, and the club scene of the early 90s, he aspired to be a club DJ, hence he kept building his CD collection. In 1995, unable to find his favourite track of the time, Mighty Dub Kats: Magic Carpet Ride, which had just been released as a 12” white label, he caved in and bought his first Electronica vinyl. The rest is history. Today, his record collection has grown beyond control, and includes a healthy mix of all genres of music. DJ Abasi owns/spins many different styles of music, but he currently specializes in electro*, underground/deep/funky/vocal/disco house, techno, progressive house, and mash-up/eclectic. Abasi and the Intimate crew have organized many legendary parties and club nights around town. Currently, he helps organize and spins @ Lotus Long Weekend, where he has been pushing the electro* sound in Vancouver since 2003. He can also be found at The Eatery for “Eatery Sessions” on the first Friday of each month, delivering a healthy dose of mashed-up beats. He has played locally at almost all Vancouver clubs as well as in the UK. His past residencies include Cheeky, Luscious, Shaken Not Stirred and Big Trouble. DJ Abasi is also a part of the Team Trainwreck trio along with Dr. Jones and Glyn, whose specialty is delivering the mash-up/eclectic sounds and showing the crowd how to have a good time. He has opened for Derek Carter (Chicago), Marshall Jefferson (Chicago), Llorca (Paris), J-Dub (Chicago), Nigel Mihel (UK), Jon Lee (Seattle) and Jamie Thinnes (Season's Recordings, LA) among others. He has also played alongside/opened for almost all of the local Vancouver DJs such as Andy Clockwork, Nicky Delgado, RC Lair, Noah, Jay Auto, my!gay!husband!, Trevor Risk, DJ Lush, Wood + Soo, Leanne, Veronica, Little-T, Todd Omotani, Krown, Miss Innocent, Safra, Skywalker, Jay Tripwire, Tyler Stadius, Nancy Kyd, Scott Audio, Jesse Hills, DJ Michael, Chris Schmidt, Expo, Grooverobber, OJ, Tom Thomas, G-Rock, Dr. Jones, Glyn, and a lot more.
